We believe that successful students require both excellent academic and pastoral support. On these pages you will find information on where to find wellbeing support in the department and in the wider College and you will also find information on external organisations.

Counselling and mental health advice
Access free and confidential short-term counselling from the Student Counselling and Mental Health Advice Service.
Student Mental Health Advisers offer you support and advice if you are affected by significant or enduring mental health difficulties.
Study Mentors can help you keep on track with academic work. Life skills workshops are also available.
Speak to a fellow student through Nightline, a confidential helpline run by trained students. It offers support through the night during term-time.
Wellbeing Roles in Design Engineering
Wellbeing Adviser
Sophie Hughes

The role of Wellbeing Adviser is a new post and enhances the support students receive from their personal tutors. Sophie will develop resources, run workshops and awareness-raising events. Sophie is also available to speak to on a one-to-one basis on a wide range of issues including settling into college life, relationship worries, stress, mental health, loneliness, concerns about substance or alcohol misuse
Personal Tutors
Your personal tutor is there to support you in your personal, general academic, and professional development. Through regular contact and the establishment of a supportive and professional relationship, the Personal Tutors maintain an overview of their tutees’ academic progress, development and wellbeing.
Senior and Deputy Senior Tutors

Mazdak and Becky are responsible for the welfare and academic progress of every undergraduate student in the department. You can speak to them if you have concerns about your academic progress or if you feel that there are circumstances that are causing you academic pressure.
Please note that Dr Maria Apud Bell will be standing in as Deputy Senior Tutor from November 2020 - June 2021.
Faculty Senior Tutor
Dr Lorraine Craig
Faculty Senior Tutors have responsibility for ensuring the delivery of consistent, high quality support for students in their personal, general academic and professional development. Working with and supporting Personal Tutors and Senior Tutors, they ensure that support systems are effective, that training is appropriate and that College policies in student support are implemented. In addition, each Faculty Senior Tutor provides support to their senior tutors and directly to students who have more complex concerns or situations.
Wellbeing and Academic Reps
Wellbeing reps can signpost you to further support from the Wellbeing Adviser. Wellbeing reps raise awareness of any issues affecting student wellbeing including mental or physical health, finance, relationships, equality and diversity, and personal safety.

Academic reps can signpost you to further support and use your feedback to inform academic staff on issues that students face, including assessments, learning experience, resources and academic experience.

Mental Health First Aiders

Mental Health First Aiders will provide you with a safe space to start a confidential conversation about your mental health and signpost you to the most appropriate support.

The School Disability Officer is your first point of contact if you have a physical or learning disability that requires additional support such as special exam arrangements.
