We explore all things metals, minerals and mining, with a focus on sustainability

We investigate how best to source, produce, extract and use the Earth's resources to support our growing global population, and seek new and improved routes towards sustainable, renewable forms of energy production and storage.

We focus on how best to extract Earth's resources with minimal environmental impact and, among other topics:

study how fluid flows and moves through the subsurface;
characterise reservoirs and industrial-scale energy and environmental systems;
explore renewable and nuclear energy systems in collaboration with the Department's Energy research;
and are assessing how the field of petroleum geoscience and engineering will evolve in coming years as we target sustainable technologies to support the energy transition.

London Centre for Ore Deposits and Exploration (LODE)

Probing the mineralogy and geochemistry of ore deposits to optimise discovery, and reducing the environmental impact of resource extraction

MAss Spectrometry and Isotope Geochemistry at IC (MAGIC)

Using isotope geochemistry to tackle a broad variety of questions in Earth, environmental, and engineering sciences

Novel Reservoir Modelling and Simulation (NORMS)

Developing and applying new methods to monitor and model fluid flow in subsurface reservoirs (from groundwater to magma to hydrocarbons)
